Fresh from Antarctica, GWAR stopped by Bend OR last week to push presidential candidate Sleazy P. Martini and battle other politicians for the Frank Sinatra Belt of World Domination.  As an added bonus, K2 Snowboards sponsored the MDP premier of Down With People before GWAR took stage.

K2 Snowboards was awesome enough to send a few of us down to the show with VIP and backstage credentials.  Apparently they were strict enforcers of a “one-beer-maximum” rule in the VIP area, so we were kicked out fairly quickly.  Fortunately most of the action was happening beyond the backstage borders.  Toxic Holocaust and Kingdom of Sorrow put everyone in the metal mood before the Mack Dawg Premier of Down with People.  Toxic Holocaust had some awesome song introductions that are unfortunately over the PG-13 rating that this blog has.  They ruled though.

Danger Ehren from MTV’s Jackass was there to host us through the whole ordeal.  He was tossing out free schwag from K2 Snowboards, 686 Outerwear, Dakine Backpacks, Burton, and more.  One lucky crowd member was able to fight his way to a new K2 Snowboard.

GWAR stormed the stage around 10:30 with a metal rampage and spewing blood.  They put on a politically themed show where various candidates fought for the Frank Sinatra Belt of World Domination.  My highlight was watching McCain’s head get chopped off.  The crowd was stoked and covered in bodily fluids from the band members.  Those who survived the show were able to hear Oderus Urungus’ farewell message:: “Some may think that just because you ride a snowboard, or a surfboard, or a skateboard that you’re cool.  Well you’re not.  Try looking cool with a snowboard shoved up your @#$!”  Awesome.

UK Band, The Streets, to Perform

INNSBRUCK, AUT (November 13, 2008) – The Burton European Open (BEO) today announced that a number of the world’s top snowboarders plan to compete at this year’s 10th annual event, taking place from January 9-16 in Laax, Switzerland. The BEO is the third Burton Global Open Series event this season and a 6 Star TTR Event that offers top prizes like two new Volvo XC 60s and over $125,000 in prize money.

Among the confirmed invited riders are Burton Global Open Series Champion 07/08 Peetu Piiroinen from Finland, Olympic champion and defending 08 BEO slopestyle winner Shaun White (USA), Mikkel Bang (NOR), who placed second at least year’s Air & Style in Munich, and Swiss style master Nicolas Müller. The women’s line-up is also impressive with TTR World Champion 07/08 Jamie Anderson (USA), BEO 08 halfpipe winner and Olympic gold medallist Kelly Clark (USA), Dutch slopestyle queen Cheryl Maas, Canadian Marie-France Roy, Laax local Sina Candrian and the UK’s outstanding rider Jenny Jones, who came very close to winning the BGOS championship title last year.

The BEO’s 10th birthday will not only be celebrated with outstanding snowboarding, but also with legendary parties and live music acts. UK band The Streets will play a live concert on Friday, January 16th at The Riders Palace. Mike Skinner of The Streets just released a new album in September 2008 called “Everything is Borrowed” with the hit-single “I love you more (than you like me)”. The Berlin duo, Stereo Total, will play at the riders’ welcome party on Wednesday night, January 14th. According to the band’s website, “Stereo Total has created a colorful and fascinating universe oscillating between the essential punkrock, disco and electro garage chanson and genius dilettantism.”

Winter Dew Tour to Kick Off Dec 18 at Breckenridge Resort in Colorado

NEW YORK – November 12, 2008 – The Winter Dew Tour today announced the world’s top snowboard athletes that will compete for the coveted Dew Cup and a share of the $1.5 million prize purse offered at the end of the three-stop series, which will kick off December 18 in Breckenridge, Colo.

The athlete roster reads like the who’s who of professional snowboarding, highlighted by multiple X Games and Olympic medalists including Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Andreas Wiig, Travis Rice and Gretchen Bleiler.

“I feel like the Dew Tour is gonna be huge and I’m really looking forward to riding on the entire series this year,” said Teter. “The roster of athletes that will be competing on the Winter Dew Tour is sick. It’ll be a fun battle to see who comes away with Dew Cup at the end of the season.”

White, who’s competed in skateboard vert on the Summer Dew Tour, will be the first Summer crossover athlete. White was the Dew Tour season points leader for skateboard vert in 2007, and was awarded the coveted Dew Cup for his efforts. After successful Summer season’s, White will compete in the superpipe discipline on the Winter Dew Tour. The 22-year-old from Carlsbad, Calif. has been a force to be reckoned with in competitive snowboarding since the tender age of 14.

“This is shaping up to be as impressive of an athlete field as anyone could hope for in a winter event; the Winter Dew Tour competition is bound to be a fight to the bitter end,” said Wade Martin, AST president. “With more than 28 hours of original programming on NBC, MTV, MTV2 and USA, there will be action-packed content for the crowds onsite in addition to the fans at home tuning in to the broadcast.”

Big news for the Volcom Women’s snowboard program! In September, they announced that Elena Hight had joined the Volcom snowboard program. The young and accomplished rider has been with Volcom Clothing since October 2005. Starting immediately she will be rocking Volcom from her beanie to the snowboard under her feet.
