10th Annual Burton European Open Confirms Top Snowboarders and Music Acts

Shaun White, Jamie Anderson and Cheryl Maas Plan to Compete

UK Band, The Streets, to Perform

INNSBRUCK, AUT (November 13, 2008) – The Burton European Open (BEO) today announced that a number of the world’s top snowboarders plan to compete at this year’s 10th annual event, taking place from January 9-16 in Laax, Switzerland. The BEO is the third Burton Global Open Series event this season and a 6 Star TTR Event that offers top prizes like two new Volvo XC 60s and over $125,000 in prize money.

Among the confirmed invited riders are Burton Global Open Series Champion 07/08 Peetu Piiroinen from Finland, Olympic champion and defending 08 BEO slopestyle winner Shaun White (USA), Mikkel Bang (NOR), who placed second at least year’s Air & Style in Munich, and Swiss style master Nicolas Müller. The women’s line-up is also impressive with TTR World Champion 07/08 Jamie Anderson (USA), BEO 08 halfpipe winner and Olympic gold medallist Kelly Clark (USA), Dutch slopestyle queen Cheryl Maas, Canadian Marie-France Roy, Laax local Sina Candrian and the UK’s outstanding rider Jenny Jones, who came very close to winning the BGOS championship title last year.

For amateur riders who want a chance to compete against the top pros, online rider registration is open until November 20th at opensnowboarding.com.

The BEO’s 10th birthday will not only be celebrated with outstanding snowboarding, but also with legendary parties and live music acts. UK band The Streets will play a live concert on Friday, January 16th at The Riders Palace. Mike Skinner of The Streets just released a new album in September 2008 called “Everything is Borrowed” with the hit-single “I love you more (than you like me)”. The Berlin duo, Stereo Total, will play at the riders’ welcome party on Wednesday night, January 14th. According to the band’s website, “Stereo Total has created a colorful and fascinating universe oscillating between the essential punkrock, disco and electro garage chanson and genius dilettantism.”

Check out all the riders rocking their new Burton Snowboards, Burton Snowboard Jackets and Burton Snowboard Pants, not to mention Jamie Anderson on her new Salomon Snowboard.

If you can’t make it to Switzerland, watch the BEO semi-finals and finals live on Go211.com, where webcasts and highlights of the competitions will also be available for on-demand viewing once the event is over.

Who’s Next On The Chopping Block?

November 5th, 2008 by mason

Rumor has it that Burton Snowboards have been making some budget cuts this year due to the down fall brought on by Channel Islands and Alien Workshop ties.  Team members are fearing the worst as riders like DCP, Romain De’Marchi and Elena Hight were dropped from the Burton Global Team this season.  Notice that they are no longer listed in the roster.  Is this an economic recession influence?  Or Burton’s attempt to bring on new found team riders with larger paychecks?  No stories have been confirmed as of yet, but we’re sure to find out where these riders find their new home in the upcoming months.  Gigi Ruf has already made the move over to Volcom Snowboarding.  Will Romain, DCP, or Elena be next?  More to report as the story unfolds…
